I hope this helps!

Some things like keepsakes and mementos are just more difficult to make decisions on. Keepsakes can generally be divided into two categories. First there are the ones you choose to keep because they have great personal value to YOU. You cherish these. Then there are the keepsakes that were cherished by another. Just because it was cherished by someone else, doesn’t mean you are obligated to cherish it and hold on to it. It is often very difficult to make decisions on things in this second category.

I find taking a photo of the item is the first step to pinpointing how you feel about an item. Looking at a photo allows you to see the item with less emotion, easier to make a decision.

There will be someone out there that will cherish it as much as the original owner. If it’s something you are ready to let go of, text it to others who you think might want it. This can be family, relatives, or friends.

If they say they want it, be clear that they need to pick it up by the agreed upon date. You are not obligated to drop off or mail anything. That is their responsibility. Unfortunately, many times the time you need to put into selling something may be more than the actual monetary value of it, so do a little research. Same can happen to things that need repair.

At the very least we often need to be practical. If you don’t have room or can’t integrate them into your décor, that means you don’t really have physical space to keep them. We all often keep more than we should, myself included. It’s always a dance between cherishing mementos and being overrun by them.
