Paper clutter tells you something in your paper processing system doesn’t work (for you). It’s
great to say I am going to deal with every piece as soon as it comes in, but if you have paper
clutter that is unrealistic. Give your current system some thought. Think of it as a flow chart.
Drawing it out helps. As paper comes in what happens? Does it have a defined place where it can
neatly wait for you to deal with it, like an inbox? Do you have a conveniently placed recycling
basket and shredder?

Where do you put papers you want to keep? Do you prefer file cabinets, baskets, binders?
Whichever method you choose, label clearly with easy-to-read labels. A label maker or a black
Sharpie work well. The stress of hunting for important papers is no fun. I find in most cases,
things filed by subject are easier to locate that an alphabetical system; but, if an alphabetical
system makes more sense to you, absolutely file that way. Make sure you have a designated
place for Taxes 2025 and of course Taxes 2026.

It’s interesting how many uncashed checks I find when I am organizing homes. Decide where
these will be kept, until you deposit them. And when you deposit by phone, what happens with
the check? You need to at least keep it until it clears. I have a quirky little system that works for
me. After I do a phone deposit, I make a simple tear in the top middle of the check and put it in
my designated drawer. Once it clears, I shred. This works for me. Think about what would work
for you.
