While working on Conquering Your Paper Chaos, allow yourself to consider your work
space. The space in which you work is your office and you may have more than one. In
addition to my office, I frequently work in my car which I lovingly refer to as my “office
on wheels”. Think about it. . . work from anywhere, always an available change of
scenery, comfortable chair, quiet, climate control, and with a personal hotspot connect
from almost anywhere. Need to create you “Office on the go”? Grab my “Organizing
Toolbox” checklist. Grab a copy here (https://yourawesomeorganizedhome.com/organizingtoolboxchecklist)
So let’s think about your office. Do you love it or dread it? If you dread it, let’s change
that!
First, let’s identify the problem(s).
Inconvenient location: If your kids are constantly playing in the backyard or play
room, having an office at the other end of the house is probably not going to be
convenient and therefore used, unless you have a nanny. You will be in perpetual
walking back and forth. Perhaps a portable “Organizing Toolbox” and filing cabinet on
wheels will work for you.
Desk placement: A client was very uncomfortable in her office. We discovered that her desk placement
put her back to the door, and she couldn’t see when customers and colleagues where
approaching. The solution was rearranging the furniture so she could easily see and
great people as they entered her office.
Try different office locations, arrangements, and décor. Note where and what, works
and feels best?
Lighting: Frequently overlooked is lighting. Those cute little lamps you put on the night stand or a
single dim desktop lamp isn’t going to work well. Layer light. Have an overhead, a desk
lamp, and special lighting for when you are on the zoom calls.
Temperature control:
Space heaters and small air conditioners are huge productivity boosters. It’s hard to be
focused and get stuff done; when you are either sweating profusely or your teeth are
chattering.
Ugly: Do you avoid your office like the plague, because it just doesn’t feel good? Or it feels
great, but you look around and the décor is well “Yuk!”
I’m going through this right now. I love my home office! Great light, airflow, second
floor, and I love the activity of facing the street. But the décor is former child’s
room/guest room. Not my vibe. More about this change later.
Disorganized chaos: An organized office provides you with space to work on a project, collaborate with
colleagues, meet with clients, and possibly have room for an assistant. They can come
to you in person or virtualy saving you valuable travel time that you can use for taking
advantage of new opportunities. The next time a colleague, potential client or joint
venture partner wants to drop by, will you welcome the opportunity and say come on
in?
