You’ve searched on line for weeks, months, maybe even years. You’ve ordered, you’ve waited. Finally, the big day is here! You drag that big box in the door. Now what?
Now it’s time to assemble. Follow these tips for a smoother assembly.
1. Give yourself enough space and protect the surfaces
2. Open the box
3. Review the directions and make sure you have the parts and tools you need
4. Gather your tools
5. Follow the directions
1. Protect the area you are using to assemble the furniture. This protects the furniture too. An unexpected scratch would be tragically unnecessary. If the furniture comes in an extra-large box, I like to use the cardboard. Old sheets, flat thin blankets, and tarps work well also. If you have an extra-large work table great, if not grab a low stool, so you don’t need to sit on the floor.
2. Which-ever tool you are using to open the box, use caution not to damage the furniture or injure yourself. Cutting through packaging tape seems to be a unique (one of a kind) experience every time. Sometimes it’s so easy! Sometimes it’s more of a challenge. Sometimes I feel I will never get that box open. Beware of staples, extremely sharp. If you have pets that love to get in on the action and do the cardboard grab and run, it might be best to close the door. Stay on top of bagging trash.
3. Review the directions. Unpack and lay out the pieces. Make sure you have everything. I have found that many of the parts, wood pieces and screws often look very similar in the diagrams and in person. If two pieces look alike, trust me they are most likely not interchangeable. Look at things like quantity, length, or number of predrilled holes to help decide which is which. Usually, they are labeled by the manufacturer with numbers or letters.
4. Gather your tools. If you have a small portable tool box, bring that on in. A lot of times the only tool you will need is the provided Allen wrench in the box, but often you may also need a Phillips or Flat head screw driver.
5. Actually follow the directions. I find the diagrams especially helpful, because I am very visual. You may find the written directions easier, although for me, I have often found them difficult to understand. Even though I have had success while NOT following the directions, I have also had to do a number of do-overs (not fun) because I didn’t. Yes, I have learned the hard way, when assembling furniture, follow the directions. Most importantly don’t rush yourself. Take your time. Better to take a break, than rush.
If you decide you do not want to assemble yourself, you can hire someone like me to assemble it for you.
