Find tools when you need them.
For me, there is nothing more frustrating than knowing you have a tool, but you can’t
find it, or it turns up rusted or otherwise unusable. Organizing tools is all about how
you store them. To be useful, they have got to be accessible when you need them.
Yes, I know quality tool boxes and storage units are expensive, but in the long run
proper storage will save you money by eliminating time consuming and expensive
trips to the hardware store for new tools.
Even if you have a handyman/woman you adore who does everything for you it is
still a good idea to have a basic tool box. A tool box is a far superior place to keep
tools than the kitchen junk drawer. I sent each of my kids off to college with a well-
stocked portable tool box. Even my son, who’s great quantity of tools is contained in
a standing tool box, still enjoys a portable tool box for on the go. You can then use
that kitchen drawer for kitchen stuff.
If you have too many tools that you would never use, or don’t know what they are,
like non-sentimental inherited ones, donate or sell them. Tools that are broken
or not in good shape are just dangerous to use and have around.
Step 1: Find and go through all of your tools. Decide which are keepers, discards,
sells, and donates.
Step 2: Choose a medium sized tool box that you can easily carry even when filled.
The size will depend on your needs. I keep my toolbox well stocked accessible in the
back of the car.

Step 3: Chose a workbench area in your garage if you have one, or select a place to
store the tools you don’t want to store in your toolbox or don’t fit.
Step 4: Purchase containers to hold your additional tools. The containers need to
be sturdy and easy to use no hard to open drawers or containers that fall over when
you try to use them. if you have a lot of tools, it is easier in my opinion and as a time
saver, to purchase your tool storage containers first and sort and organize right into
the drawers.
You may have excellent options for storing tools in other areas of your home. Old
wide lateral file cabinets are great for large tools like hedge trimmers, drills, and
circular saws. Its makes sense to store gardening tools together. There are so many
options for gardening tools, traditional potting sheds, wooden shed, plastic sheds,
shelves in the garage. Or create a stylish gardening basket to corral gardening tools
and easy portability.
Step 5: Remember to label drawers and containers. Label tools where the specific
size is not obvious.
